Put a Lid on It - Adding Indoor Storage Benches to Your Home

We usually are looking for a way to add storage space in our homes without taking on a big construction project. Can we think of a single space in our homes that wouldn't benefit from a little more storage? One way to do this is with an indoor storage bench. Room by room, we can find a way to put this versatile and useful piece of furniture to work.

From the moment we step into our homes, we can find many places for indoor storage benches. Coming in from the garage or the driveway, we might step into a mud room. This staging area is a great place to keep our outdoor clothing like coats and jackets, boots and galoshes, gloves and mittens, and hats and scarves all in a convenient spot-in the place where we will use them. If you add indoor storage benches, you have quick storage and easy access to this clothing. A bench lets you sit down to take off the boots or the athletic footwear, and a storage bench lets you put them away so there's no searching for them the next time you need them.

If you want to customize a mud room, you can find indoor storage benches built into individual lockers for each member of the family. With this option, there's no reason for confusion-you've got a place for everything, and everything in its place.

Move into the kitchen. If you have a breakfast nook, consider using indoor storage benches against the wall or under a windowsill. You can squeeze an extra kid or two on the bench in a pinch, and that's a more efficient use of space than using standard kitchen chairs. And since it's got storage built in, you can lift the lid and hide away placemats, napkins, takeout menus, and the other things you regularly use while working and playing around the kitchen table.

We spend a lot of time in our family rooms, and these places are magnets for the stuff we collect. Indoor storage benches outfitted with some big baskets can keep precious snuggly toys, a baby blanket, the diaper bag, or a box of baby wipes nearby. And if our toddlers need to learn a little discipline, the indoor storage bench can serve as a short timeout spot. To help keep things together for quiet family time, you can stow the kids' DVDs, CDs, games, and books in those baskets, too. If you like to stretch out on the couch when the little ones are down for naps, you can store a quilt and a pillow there for you, too.

What about the bedroom? Indoor storage benches are a popular addition here. Put one at the foot of your bed, and you have a great spot for storing sheets, blankets, and pillows. If you change your bed linens periodically, store the out-of-season things in the storage bench. A deep storage bench is also a good place for storing purses, hats, and travel accessories, and it gives you a place to sit when you buckle your sandals while you're getting dressed or slip off your sneakers after the gym.

The room that is often the most storage-challenged is the bathroom. If you've got a vanity, consider using a small indoor storage bench instead of a stool or chair. Lift the lid of the bench, and you can stash away towels and wash cloths, your favorite soap and bath oil, cosmetics and perfumes, combs and hairbrushes, and even a magazine for those leisurely soaks in the tub.
